A tragic fire in Kuwait claimed the lives of 45 Indian workers living in a residential building in Mangaf city. The Indian Air Force brought back their bodies for identification, with two still unidentified. Dozens of other workers, mostly Indian, were also injured in the fire.
Kuwait, heavily reliant on migrant labor, has come under scrutiny for its treatment of foreign workers, with concerns raised about their living conditions. DNA tests were conducted to identify the victims, with workers from various Indian states among the deceased.
The Indian government arranged a special Air Force flight to transport the bodies, landing first in Kerala before heading to Delhi. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed sorrow over the tragedy and announced compensation for the families of the deceased.
Authorities in Kuwait are investigating health and safety conditions in buildings housing foreign workers following the fire, which was found to have started due to an electrical short circuit. Those responsible for negligence in implementing fire safety measures have been detained.
