However, halfway through the election, Prime Minister Modi denied targeting Muslims in his speeches, suggesting a shift in strategy.
Despite the BJP’s focus on Hindu-Muslim issues, the results showed a different picture. The party suffered losses in key states like Uttar Pradesh, where Muslims expressed concern over unemployment and rising costs rather than religious tensions. This setback forced the BJP to rely on coalition allies to stay in power.
Moving forward, the BJP aims to implement a Uniform Civil Code nationwide, a controversial move in a diverse country like India. With limited representation of minority groups in the government, Modi must now prioritize consensus-building to steer sensitive laws like the civil code without appearing majoritarian.
By adopting a more inclusive approach, Modi can follow in the footsteps of respected leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and solidify India’s position as a global power.
