Quest, Shackleton’s Last Ship, Discovered 390 Meters Deep off Labrador
The Royal Canadian Geographical Society announced the discovery of the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s final ship, the Quest, off the coast of Labrador. The vessel was found 62 years after it went missing under 390 meters of water, its mast broken beside it after striking ice in 1962.
Lead by John Geiger, the Shackleton Quest Expedition located the ship using sonar scans. Geiger emphasized the importance of telling great stories and celebrating human attributes rather than ego, considering the Quest a historically significant vessel.
Shackleton bought the Quest to travel to Canada’s High Arctic but later set sail for the Antarctic, where he passed away in 1922. The vessel, now resting on the seabed, will be thoroughly documented and studied by a crew using a remotely operated vehicle.
