The Irish Government is gearing up to take part in an EU military initiative aimed at protecting critical seabed infrastructure from potential threats. This proposal, set to be approved soon, falls under the umbrella of the PESCO framework, where EU member states collaborate to bolster their armed forces.
With undersea infrastructure damage recently identified as a major risk for Ireland, joining forces with other EU countries in this initiative would enhance surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. It would also facilitate the sharing of crucial information and the development of coordinated response plans in case of a maritime threat.
Led by Italy and already featuring seven EU members, this project will require both Government and Dáil approval for Ireland to participate. Additionally, the Government is poised to greenlight a plan for engaging in cyber defence exercises spearheaded by the European Defence Agency.
This strategic move signifies Ireland’s commitment to bolstering national security and contributing to collective European defence efforts.
