The Nigeria Labour Congress has decided not to go on strike tomorrow to demand a new national minimum wage. NLC President Joe Ajaero announced this during the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. The strike was called off because the proposed wage figures are currently with President Bola Tinubu.
The tripartite committee suggested N62,000, while the labour proposed N250,000 as the new minimum wage. Ajaero mentioned that this does not mean labour has accepted N62,000, as they are waiting for the President’s decision before making a move.
Ajaero criticized the governors who rejected the N62,000 minimum wage proposal, suggesting that they should first decentralize their own salaries before questioning the feasibility of the proposed minimum wage. He praised Edo state governor Godwin Obaseki for paying N70,000 as a minimum wage, emphasizing the need for other governors to follow suit.
