Polish President Andrzej Duda has signed amendments to a special law providing assistance to Ukrainians who sought refuge in Poland following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The law extends support to Ukrainian families, particularly children attending Polish schools.
The amendments allow for social assistance programs to be provided to families of children in Polish schools, aiming to ensure equal educational opportunities for all Ukrainian children. The law also allows for changing the status of Ukrainians’ stay in Poland from temporary to up to three years.
The new law simplifies the process for Ukrainians to obtain a PESEL number in Poland, requiring proof of identity with a valid Ukrainian travel document. The law also cancels certain allowances for Ukrainian refugees, while extending temporary protection for displaced persons from Ukraine until September 2025.
With approximately one million Ukrainian refugees in Poland, the new law aims to provide necessary support and assistance to those affected by the conflict.
