Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo expressed concern over the timing of French parliamentary elections just weeks before the Paris Olympics, calling it “extremely unsettling”. However, the International Olympic Committee reassured that the elections would not directly impact the event.
Hidalgo, a domestic political rival of President Macron, highlighted her worries about the far-right National Rally party’s recent victory and the potential instability caused by the elections. Despite this, she emphasized that the operational preparations for the Olympics would not be affected.
The two-round parliamentary elections are scheduled for June 30 and July 7, with the Paris Olympics commencing on July 26. While the outcome of the elections could bring political changes, both Hidalgo and IOC President Thomas Bach conveyed confidence in the event’s successful execution.
The Paris Olympics will kick off with a unique opening ceremony on the river Seine, marking the first time a Summer Olympics opening has been held outside the main stadium. Despite the political situation, Paris remains enthusiastic about hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
