UNRWA Calls for Independent Investigations into Attacks on Gaza Shelters
“No one is being held accountable. It is time for independent investigations + accountability.” Philippe Lazzarini
The UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has demanded investigations into the attacks on its buildings in the Gaza Strip, including the recent bombing of a shelter in Nuseirat that killed at least 35 people.
UNRWA’s communications director, Juliette Touma, revealed that more than 170 UN buildings, mostly schools serving as shelters, have been targeted, resulting in over 450 deaths. She emphasized the need for accountability for such violations.
Israel’s Justification
The Israeli army admitted to bombing a compound linked to Hamas inside the UNRWA school in Nuseirat. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini criticized the attack, stressing the need to protect UN staff and premises according to international humanitarian law.
Lazzarini also called for independent investigations into the attacks on UN facilities in Gaza, as accountability is lacking. The escalation of violence has led to a staggering death toll, with thousands killed or missing, and a dire humanitarian crisis.
UNRWA’s efforts to shelter displaced persons and provide aid are under increasing threat, as Israel considers labeling the organization as a terrorist group. The UNRWA chief highlighted the urgent need for accountability and an end to the violence plaguing Gaza.
