During a recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif pledged to enhance cooperation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and focus on innovation and green industry initiatives. However, Sharif emphasized the need for Pakistan to create a secure environment for Chinese projects and personnel.
The meeting came following a deadly suicide bomb attack in Pakistan that claimed the lives of five Chinese engineers. Sharif assured China of Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding Chinese citizens and interests in the country.
Experts suggest that while China seeks closer security cooperation with Pakistan, there are concerns about the effectiveness of Pakistan’s current security measures. Despite this, both countries are keen on strengthening economic and trade ties through projects like the CPEC.
Sharif also visited China’s key innovation hubs to discuss collaboration in new energy and information technology sectors, highlighting the importance of economic development in Pakistan. Additionally, negotiations are expected to extend Pakistan’s loan repayment dates to manage its increasing external debt.
