Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is celebrating victory as his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led coalition secures 293 seats in India’s lower house of Parliament. Despite falling short of the 272 majority mark on its own, the BJP remains in power with the support of its allies in the National Democratic Alliance.
The opposition coalition of 28 parties, known as I.N.D.I.A. (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance), secured 234 seats in the election. The Congress party, part of the opposition bloc, won 99 seats, an increase from its 2019 results.
This election, with over 640 million votes counted, was the largest in the world, held in seven phases over six weeks. Nearly a billion people were eligible to vote, making it a significant event in Indian political history.
