The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is making its largest ever investment of over $25 million in down-ballot races across the country for the upcoming election cycle. The organization aims to take a proactive approach on issues like abortion rights and has plans to be involved in various races and ballot measures.
ACLU’s efforts will be focused on U.S. Senate races, state Supreme Court races, state legislative races, and ballot measures related to abortion rights and redistricting reform in multiple states. Additionally, the organization will organize volunteer deployments to educate voters on how to respond to potential challenges during the election.
Deirdre Schifeling, ACLU’s chief political and advocacy officer, emphasized the importance of going on offense to win civil rights and liberties, rather than just defending them. The organization’s investment includes creating a federal super PAC, the ACLU Voter Education Fund, to disburse the funds.
The ACLU’s nonpartisan efforts will focus on issues like reproductive rights, voting rights, and democracy. The funds will be used for direct mail, digital ads, door-to-door canvassing, and grassroots mobilization to support candidates who align with ACLU’s values.
