Russian Drone Attack Causes Partial Blackout in Rivne Oblast
An overnight Russian drone attack led to a power outage in some parts of Rivne Oblast, as reported by Governor Oleksandr Koval on May 29. The air raid alert was active in northwestern Ukraine between 12:40 a.m. and 2 a.m., with air defense forces successfully shooting down a drone that caused debris to fall on an energy facility.
Koval stated, “The protection system was activated, leading to the blackout of some populated areas.” Fortunately, there were no casualties, and power has been restored to the affected regions. The recent increase in Russian strikes has put a significant strain on Ukraine’s power grid, resulting in several power plants being destroyed or disabled.
As a response, Ukraine began implementing scheduled shutdowns on May 15 to manage the power deficits. Despite these challenges, the country continues to receive support, with Belgium signing a security deal and pledging $1 billion in aid to Ukraine this year.
