A Pennsylvania man, Bryan Hagerich, arrived back in Pittsburgh after being released from custody on the Turks and Caicos Islands for having ammunition in his luggage. He is one of five Americans detained on the islands, facing up to 12 years in prison for the crime.
Hagerich expressed relief at being able to coach his kids’ baseball game the next day upon his return. He described his detention as the most challenging time of his life, being separated from his family.
A suspended sentence of 52 months was issued to Hagerich, who also had to pay a $6,500 fine. Lawmakers hailed his return, with bipartisan efforts securing his release. Hagerich emphasized that there are still Americans in detention on the islands who he hopes will be home soon.
Hagerich’s case is one of five Americans detained for having stray ammunition in their luggage while traveling. While back home, Hagerich expressed gratitude for the support he received during this ordeal.
