The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to immediately halt its military offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
The ICJ ruled that Israel’s actions in Rafah were not sufficient and ordered measures to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians. Israel must provide unimpeded access to Gaza for inquiries.
The ICJ President highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation in Rafah, classified as “disastrous”. The case, brought by South Africa, accuses Israel of genocide.
South Africa’s Requests
South Africa demanded Israel to cease the offensive, allow humanitarian access to Gaza, and permit entry for UN officials and journalists. The court has previously ordered Israel to avoid actions that could lead to genocide.
Genocide Case
Other countries support South Africa in accusing Israel of genocide. The ICJ’s rulings are binding, impacting a country’s reputation. The conflict has led to a staggering death toll in Gaza.
