The Kano State House of Assembly has officially repealed the establishment of five new emirates within the state by passing the Kano Emirates Council Law (Repeal Bill) 2024 after its third reading. This legislative change, sponsored by Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, marks a significant shift in governance.
The new bill dissolves all offices created under the repealed law and requires district heads promoted or appointed under the previous law to return to their former positions. Originally assented to by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, subsequent amendments were made in 2020 and 2023.
Section 3(1) of the law had initially established five distinct emirates, but amendments were made following the deposition of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi, designating the chairman of the council as the emir of the Kano Emirate. Section 12 now empowers the governor to classify the office of an emir as first, second, or third class with approval from the House of Assembly.
Despite potential obstacles, a principal officer of the assembly affirmed their determination to amend the law, signaling a definitive shift in policy and governance within the state.
