German Chancellor Scholz Backs Increased Arms Cooperation with India
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed support for enhanced arms cooperation with India during his recent visit to the South Asian country. The visit concluded with the signing of 27 new cooperation agreements in various fields, including renewable energy and critical technologies. Both countries are aiming to intensify their alliance, particularly in the area of weapons exports.
Defense Cooperation and Co-Production
Scholz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed on increased industry-level cooperation in the defense sector, focusing on technology collaboration, manufacturing, and co-development of defense platforms. Germany has been a significant arms supplier to India, with growing ties leading to the lifting of export restrictions on small arms earlier this year.
Scholz Meets German Navy after Indo-Pacific Patrols
During the visit, Scholz also commended German sailors who recently completed joint military exercises with the Indian Navy. German naval ships have been deployed to the Indo-Pacific region to support global maritime traffic. The Chancellor highlighted the importance of fostering skilled workers and pushing for quicker negotiations on a free trade agreement between the EU and India.
