Taoiseach Simon Harris is set to meet with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati at Government Buildings to address the escalating crisis in the Middle East. Both leaders are expected to discuss the ongoing violence in the region and Ireland’s efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the situation.
Recently, Tánaiste Micheál Martin pledged an additional €5 million in aid to Lebanon during an international conference in Paris attended by Prime Minister Mikati. Following this event, Mikati will visit Ireland to meet with the Taoiseach, highlighting Ireland’s continuous support for a ceasefire in the region.
During the meeting, Taoiseach Harris will express his concern for the safety of Lebanese civilians residing in densely populated areas and reiterate Ireland’s commitment to a UN-backed ceasefire. He is also expected to condemn violations of international humanitarian law.
Ireland currently has nearly 400 peacekeepers in Lebanon as part of the UNIFIL mission, with the Taoiseach planning to address concerns about their safety during the discussions with Prime Minister Mikati.
