Steve Bannon, the conservative podcaster and former White House aide, will be released from prison a week before the U.S. election. Currently serving a 120-day sentence for contempt of Congress in Danbury, Connecticut, Bannon’s legal team’s request for home confinement in Washington, D.C. was denied by the Bureau of Prisons.
Bannon is set to be released on October 29 as originally scheduled. Acting warden Derek Puzio explained that there wasn’t enough time to secure approval for home confinement due to the remaining sentence duration. Bannon’s daughter, Maureen Bannon, has accused the prison system of political interference to delay his release and impact the election.
Convicted in 2022 for defying a subpoena from the January 6 House Select Committee, Bannon argued executive privilege to withhold his testimony. Despite multiple attempts to delay his sentence, Bannon reported to a Federal Correctional Institution on July 1.
Although Bannon left the administration after falling out of favor with Trump, he remains a strong supporter through platforms like the War Rooms podcast. Trump denounced Bannon’s imprisonment, labeling it an “unAmerican Weaponization” of law enforcement.
