US Admits Houthis Can Hit Ships in Mediterranean as Militia Swats Down Another Reaper
Houthis in Yemen have been causing chaos in the Red and Arabian Seas for over six months, targeting US, Israeli, and UK-linked ships using drones and missiles. Despite limited naval and aerial capabilities, the militia’s attacks have been successful. The Pentagon recently confirmed that Houthis could target vessels in the Mediterranean Sea, noting their advanced weaponry. While there’s no evidence of actual attacks in the Mediterranean yet, the alarming possibility raises global concerns.
Traditional US allies have refrained from engaging with the militia. Saudi Arabia has limited airspace to US warplanes attacking Yemen, seeking a diplomatic resolution instead. Houthis have issued threats to expand their blockade to the Mediterranean but haven’t done so yet.
Armed with Soviet-era missiles and long-range drones, Houthis continue to defy larger adversaries, including shooting down a US Reaper drone. The militia’s persistence and aggression pose a challenge to regional stability and security.
