Lt Governor VK Saxena recently shared photos of the Yamuna River covered in toxic froth, questioning those responsible for its cleanliness. Without naming anyone, Saxena criticized those who had promised to rejuvenate the Yamuna and make it suitable for people to bathe in, yet failed to follow through on their commitments.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had pledged to clean the Yamuna by 2025, but their efforts were hindered by legal battles. The Supreme Court intervened and stayed a National Green Tribunal order appointing the Delhi LG to lead a committee on Yamuna rejuvenation, much to the dismay of the AAP government.
With the festival of “Chhath” approaching, Saxena highlighted the importance of the Yamuna as a lifeline for Delhi. The images of the polluted river sparked outrage among Delhi residents, prompting questions about its neglect and the pain it causes to the city’s inhabitants.
As Delhi prepares to celebrate “Chhath” and offer prayers to the Sun god by the river, the condition of the Yamuna serves as a grim reminder of the work that still needs to be done to restore its health.
