French supermarket retailer Carrefour is reevaluating the treatment of staff at its Saudi Arabia franchise partner, Majid Al Futtaim (MAF), following concerns raised by Amnesty International about working conditions.
Amnesty International’s report highlighted that employees at Carrefour/Majid Al Futtaim stores in Saudi Arabia were underpaid, overworked, and vulnerable due to their migrant status. The findings were based on interviews with workers from Nepal, Pakistan, and India.
Carrefour has instructed MAF to conduct internal investigations among employees and subcontractors in Saudi Arabia to address potential human rights non-compliance situations. An independent expert has been appointed to investigate further.
Workers reported being forced to work long hours, unpaid overtime, and denial of rest days, which violates Saudi labour laws. The Saudi government has not responded to Amnesty’s allegations.
Previous reports have highlighted similar issues faced by migrant workers in Saudi Arabia, including unpaid wages and poor living conditions. Carrefour is taking steps to address these concerns and ensure compliance with human rights requirements.
