The United States Probes Leak of Classified Documents on Israeli Retaliation Plans against Iran
The US is currently investigating the leak of highly classified intelligence documents detailing Israel’s preparations for a retaliatory strike on Iran, as revealed by House Speaker Mike Johnson. The documents, believed to be from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, provide insights into Israeli Air Force and Navy planning based on satellite imagery from October 15-16.
Israel has been gearing up for a response following a ballistic missile attack by Iran on October 1, which marked the second direct assault on the country in six months. Tensions escalated after the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, prompting Israel to intensify its offensive in Gaza and Lebanon.
Both the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence have remained silent on the issue. However, the Pentagon has acknowledged looking into the reports of the leak.
Despite the authenticity of the leaked documents, US officials believe there is more undisclosed information on Israel’s strategic planning. President Joe Biden has expressed awareness of Israel’s intentions to strike Iran, while also signaling opportunities for de-escalation between the two adversaries.
