The Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR) criticized the National Assembly for a bill allowing firearms for Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) personnel. CHSR President, Mr Alex Omotehinse, voiced this concern at a news conference in Lagos, stating that the bill had passed the second reading at the House of Representatives.
Omotehinse emphasized the potential risks of arming FRSC officials, citing concerns about the abuse of arms by security agencies and the proliferation of weapons among non-state actors. He urged the National Assembly to focus on demilitarizing society and improving security agency accountability.
The proposal to arm FRSC officers was deemed unnecessary and potentially dangerous, as it could lead to further abuses against motorists and threaten road users’ safety. Additionally, granting FRSC access to firearms might set a precedent for other agencies like VIO and LASTMA to seek similar privileges.
Omotehinse called on legislative leaders to reconsider the bill and prioritize road safety measures over militarizing civil agencies. He stressed the importance of good governance and responsible security operations, rather than expanding armed agencies.
