UNIFIL Condemns Israeli Forces for Deliberate Damage to Southern Lebanon Position
United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon have accused the Israeli army of intentionally damaging one of their positions in southern Lebanon. According to the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL), an Israeli bulldozer demolished an observation tower and perimeter fence of a UN position, despite the presence of UN forces in all locations.
UNIFIL called on Israel to respect the safety and security of UN personnel and property, urging them to cease breaching UN positions, which is seen as a violation of international law. This incident comes after recent attacks on UN watchtowers, with several peacekeepers being injured.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded the removal of UNIFIL troops from “combat zones,” accusing them of providing a “human shield” for Hezbollah. However, the UN has stated that the mission, involving troops from 50 countries, will continue its operations in the region.
UNIFIL has been monitoring the border region between Israel and Lebanon since 1978, with over 10,000 troops deployed to the mission. The escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon highlight the challenges faced by UN peacekeepers in maintaining peace and security in the region.
