Prabowo Subianto Inaugurated as Indonesia’s Eighth President
Former general Prabowo Subianto became Indonesia’s eighth president, succeeding Joko Widodo in a grand ceremony attended by thousands of supporters. The 73-year-old emphasized the importance of prioritizing the interests of all Indonesians, regardless of their political affiliations.
Subianto, known for his nationalist views, called for addressing the nation’s problems and emphasized the importance of freedom from fear, poverty, and oppression. He was joined by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Widodo’s son, in taking the oath of office.
Rivals Turned Allies
Despite being former rivals in past elections, Subianto and Widodo came together politically, with Subianto promising to continue Widodo’s legacy of infrastructure development and economic growth. This unity was evident as Subianto chose Widodo’s son as his running mate.
Non-Aligned Foreign Policy
Subianto reiterated Indonesia’s non-aligned stance and expressed support for the Palestinian people during his inauguration speech. He also highlighted his readiness to provide aid to Gaza. The event was attended by dignitaries from various countries, including the US, China, and the UK.
Human Rights Concerns
However, concerns linger over Subianto’s human rights record, with allegations of military abuses in the late 1990s and during the occupation of East Timor. Despite these challenges, Subianto’s inauguration marks a new chapter in Indonesia’s leadership and foreign relations.
