Turkey and Germany are looking to enhance their partnership in defense industry products, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Istanbul. Both nations are committed to combatting terrorist groups like PKK and FETO, which jeopardize public safety in Germany as well.
Erdogan emphasized the strong bilateral relations between the two countries, citing the significant number of Turkish residents in Germany and German tourists visiting Turkey annually. The leaders discussed various topics, including trade, with a goal to increase trade volume from $50 billion to $60 billion.
Erdogan condemned Israel’s expansionist actions in the region, urging the international community to intervene for a permanent ceasefire. He stressed that peace in the region is impossible as long as Israeli attacks persist in Palestine and Lebanon.
‘Rise of Islamophobic and xenophobic movements in Europe’
The Turkish president also addressed the growing Islamophobic and xenophobic far-right movements in Europe, expressing concern for Turkish communities abroad. Discussions with German officials included Turkey’s expectations regarding its relations with the EU.
Erdogan highlighted the importance of modernizing the EU-Turkey Customs Union and visa liberalization for mutual benefits.
