UN Expert Accuses Western Nations and Israel of Freedom of Speech Violations
UN special rapporteur Irene Khan has condemned Western nations and Israel for violating freedom of speech in the year following the Gaza war. In her report, she highlighted crackdowns on pro-Palestinian protests in Western democracies, with the use of riot police and bans on demonstrations. Khan also pointed out the targeted assassinations of journalists in Gaza and the West Bank, calling it a war crime.
She criticized Germany for imposing a ban on pro-Palestinian demonstrations last October, while allowing pro-Israeli rallies to continue. France attempted a similar ban but was thwarted by courts, leading to a case-by-case assessment approach. Belgium and Canada have also taken similar actions.
Additionally, Khan raised concerns about the killing of journalists, destruction of press facilities, and denying access to international media by Israel. She accused Israeli authorities of attempting to silence critical journalism and hinder documentation of potential international crimes.
The report highlights the urgent need for accountability and protection of freedom of expression in conflict zones like Gaza.
