2,074 Persons Trafficked in Five Years, 27 Convicted
Lagos State has been identified as the primary transit and destination hub for human trafficking in Nigeria, with 2,074 individuals trafficked in the last five years. Out of those, only 27 have been convicted for their involvement in this crime.
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) revealed that areas such as Epe, Ikorodu, Agege, Apapa, and Iganmu in Lagos are considered endemic for trafficking activities. The data, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, shows a concerning trend in the number of suspected traffickers being arrested each year.
Between 2019 and 2023, a total of 429 suspects were apprehended for their alleged involvement in kidnapping and human trafficking. Despite the efforts to bring perpetrators to justice, only a small number of convictions have been secured.
The rescue of 2,074 individuals, including 116 minors, highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and stronger enforcement of anti-trafficking laws in Lagos State. It is essential to continue working towards eradicating this heinous crime and protecting vulnerable individuals from falling prey to traffickers.
