Leading up to the summit, Pakistani authorities have taken strict measures to curb dissent, such as banning an ethnic nationalist movement and imposing new laws to limit protests in the capital. The crackdown also includes the arrest of hundreds of supporters of opposition leader Imran Khan who tried to march in Islamabad.
Security fears have been exacerbated by a recent attack on Chinese engineers in Karachi, adding to concerns about separatist groups targeting Chinese nationals in Pakistan. To ensure safety during the summit, Islamabad has authorized the deployment of troops on the streets.
