Proposed Constitutional Amendments Unveiled by PML-N-led Government
The PML-N-led coalition government in Pakistan has disclosed proposed constitutional amendments regarding the formation of a Constitutional Court and its composition. According to the amendments, the new court will consist of seven members, including the Chief Justice, with the power to make binding decisions. The Chief Justice will be appointed by a retired senior judge, and the court will also include the Law Minister, Attorney General, and a representative from the Pakistan Bar Council.
The eligibility criteria for judges have been set, requiring a minimum age of 40, three years of court experience, and 10 years of legal practice. A Federal Constitutional Council will oversee the removal of judges, with the President giving final approval. The decisions of the Federal Constitutional Court will be binding and non-appealable, while appeals against provincial courts’ decisions can be made to the Federal Court.
PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui emphasized the importance of unity in passing these amendments for national interest. The proposed changes aim to bring significant reforms to Pakistan’s constitution, benefitting the country as a whole.
