Gibraltar CM vows not to yield to Spain’s pressure tactics on border controls
Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, stood firm against Spain’s reintroduction of passport controls at the La Verja crossing, requiring passports for entry from the British Overseas Territory. The measure aims to determine residency to ensure taxes are paid to the correct authorities.
Spain’s unilateral actions caused confusion and led to delays at the border, prompting Picardo to threaten reciprocity measures. After a series of back-and-forths, Spain eventually withdrew the passport stamping requirement.
Picardo emphasized the need for a balanced agreement to govern Gibraltar’s post-Brexit relationship with the EU and called for mutual respect in negotiations. He expressed disappointment in the misuse of politics to harm workers’ interests.
While tensions continue, Picardo remains committed to finding a peaceful resolution to avoid disruptions that could impact the local workforce on both sides of the border.
