Minnesota Governor Tim Walz made a bold statement at a fundraiser in Sacramento, California, calling for the abolishment of the Electoral College. Walz emphasized the need to focus on winning key counties and states to secure victory in future elections.
Walz has been a vocal critic of the Electoral College, advocating for the popular vote as a more democratic way to elect the president. In 2023, he signed legislation enrolling Minnesota in the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, a plan to prioritize the national popular vote over the Electoral College.
Despite widespread support for moving away from the Electoral College, there is a lack of political will to make the change. Only 17 states and the District of Columbia have joined the compact so far, with no Republican presidential candidate winning the popular vote in 20 years.
A recent Pew Research Center survey showed that 63% of voters prefer electing the president based on the national popular vote. While the issue continues to garner public support, it remains a challenging political hurdle to overcome.
