Lawyers Convention in Peshawar Rejects Constitutional Amendments
Lawyers gathered at a convention in Peshawar unanimously rejected proposed constitutional amendments, including the establishment of a federal constitutional court. They pledged to resist any amendment not drafted by themselves, vowing not to let the parliament serve as a rubber stamp.
The participants of the ‘All Pakistan Lawyers Convention’ condemned Israeli aggression in Gaza and Lebanon, calling on Muslim countries to unite in solidarity. Former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Hamid Khan, highlighted the threat these amendments pose to the 1973 Constitution, emphasizing the importance of unity among lawyers.
Speaking at the event, Fida Gul stressed the parliament’s right to amend the Constitution but cautioned against blindly accepting external drafts. The legal fraternity expressed concerns about the amendments’ impact on judicial independence and urged for unity to protect the Constitution’s integrity.
As the legal community stands united in opposition, the future of these controversial amendments remains uncertain.
