The Government’s proposal to spend €9 million on mobile phone pouches for secondary schools has sparked controversy. The ‘Keeping Childhood Smartphone Free’ initiative, included in Budget 2025, aims to provide storage for students’ phones during school hours to reduce distractions. Minister for Education Norma Foley defended the policy, but Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald called it a “scandalous waste of public money.” ASTI General Secretary Kieran Christie criticized the plan, stating that many schools already have measures in place to manage phone use. He highlighted the need for investment in more pressing issues like classroom resources and mental health support. Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon and teachers’ unions also criticized the decision, questioning the government’s priorities. With over €12 billion set to be invested in education, stakeholders are calling for a reconsideration of the funds allocation to address more urgent needs in schools.
