Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell has raised concerns about Moscow’s rapid “reconstitution” of its military forces during the Ukraine conflict. He pointed to Russia’s strong ties with China as a contributing factor to this military resurgence.
Campbell highlighted the urgency and determination with which Russia has rebuilt its military capabilities, causing anxiety in the West. Despite questions about providing military assistance to Ukraine, Campbell emphasized that the US remains a significant provider of aid to Kiev.
The deputy secretary noted the close partnership between Russia and China, calling it one of the most significant global engagements today. He stressed the need for diplomatic engagement with Russia to resolve the Ukraine conflict, while establishing specific red lines for US interests.
Moscow’s objectives in the conflict include neutralizing Ukraine, addressing discriminatory policies, and asserting control over certain regions.
