A recent study revealed that cities with a high percentage of voters for former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro experienced higher mortality rates during the peaks of the Covid-19 pandemic. The correlation between voting behavior and excess mortality was explored during the pandemic peaks in August 2020 and April 2021.
The research found that for every 1 percent increase in municipal votes for Bolsonaro between 2018 and 2022, there was a corresponding rise in municipal excess mortality during the pandemic peaks. This association is attributed to Bolsonaro’s role as a Covid and vaccine denialist, influencing his electorate’s beliefs and behaviors.
Similar patterns have been observed in the U.S., with a higher Covid death rate in counties that supported Donald Trump in the 2020 election. The study also highlights an inverse correlation between support for far-right candidates and vaccine uptake.
This study underscores the impact of political ideologies on public health outcomes during a global health crisis, shedding light on the importance of evidence-based policy and leadership.
