Children Lagging Behind in Climate Funding
In a stark revelation, UNICEF’s Regional Advisor for Europe and Central Asia, Maria Osbeck, disclosed that over the last seventeen years, only 2.4 percent of climate funding from vertical funds has reached children. This concerning statistic underscores the urgent need for a child-friendly approach to climate finance.
With 160 million children in the region facing increasing vulnerability to the impacts of climate change, Osbeck emphasized the critical importance of addressing environmental factors in child health.
The ongoing Baku Climate Action Week, running from September 30 to October 4, 2024, serves as a platform for crucial discussions leading up to COP29 in Baku. Bringing together diverse stakeholders, the event aims to explore climate solutions and mobilize action across various sectors.
As activities unfold throughout the city in observance of Climate Week, the call for greater attention to children’s needs in climate finance resonates as a key theme.
