Leftist Sheinbaum Makes History as Mexico’s First Female President
Claudia Sheinbaum, a 62-year-old leftist, was sworn in as Mexico’s first female president, succeeding Andrés Manuel López Obrador. She won by a wide margin and brings a scientific approach to governing, particularly evident during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Sheinbaum’s background in engineering and activism, as well as her family’s history of social activism, shape her political views. Her inauguration ceremony was attended by several international leaders, including Brazil’s Lula da Silva and Chile’s Gabriel Boric.
The new president supports democratic reforms initiated by her predecessor and also took a stand against Spain’s King Felipe VI. López Obrador, who praised Sheinbaum during his retirement, expressed confidence in her leadership.
