In a surprising move, the United States has declared its support for Israel’s ground incursion into Lebanon, despite calls from around the world for a ceasefire. Washington justified the offensive as Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah.
The advance of Israeli troops into Lebanon has raised concerns of a wider escalation in the region, prompting countries like the UAE, Qatar, and Japan to express worry. The UN has launched a $426 million humanitarian aid appeal for civilians affected by the conflict.
‘Most dangerous’
Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has called for urgent aid for a million displaced people, while the UN warns that more resources are needed to help those affected. The situation is described as one of the most dangerous phases in Lebanon’s history.
‘Territorial integrity’
The international community has urged for a halt in hostilities to prevent further escalation, with Russia and Spain among those calling for an end to ground raids. Israel’s incursion, dubbed Northern Arrows, aims to push Hezbollah north of the Litani River, in compliance with a UNSC resolution.
