The Chinese University of Hong Kong Launches Satellite for Disaster Prevention and Smart City Development
The Chinese University of Hong Kong has unveiled a groundbreaking satellite, backed by the local government, with a mission to collect data for disaster prevention and smart city development in Hong Kong and its surrounding areas.
Funded by the city’s Innovation and Technology Commission and supported by the China National Space Administration, the satellite was launched from a sea platform off the coast of Shandong last week. The spacecraft is designed to forecast natural disasters like landslides and floods, while also aiding in scientific research for Hong Kong’s sustainability.
Professor Kwan Mei-po, director of CUHK’s Institute of Space and Earth Information Science, emphasized the satellite’s ability to provide critical information efficiently. “In the past, obtaining data required time-consuming requests to the China National Space Administration. Now, with our satellite, we can access valuable data more readily,” Kwan stated.
