A man, Matthew John Davey, convicted of attempting to murder his girlfriend by setting her on fire in 2017, relied on false evidence from a prison mate during his failed court appeal.
Davey poured fuel on his then-partner and lit her on fire after she ended their relationship, resulting in catastrophic burns to 68% of her body. He had threatened to kill her if she left him and restricted her movements through coercive control.
During his appeal, Davey presented fabricated evidence from a former prison mate, Brett Pickett, claiming the victim had poured petrol on herself. The court found Pickett’s account to be a lie, and dismissed Davey’s appeal.
Davey, sentenced to 22 years in jail for attempted murder and family violence, showed no remorse and attempted to cover up the crime by asking the victim to lie about the incident.
