Jordan’s foreign minister Ayman Safadi warned that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions were escalating towards a full-fledged war in the region. Safadi’s remarks came ahead of a UN Security Council meeting on Gaza, where Israeli airstrikes targeted Hezbollah’s headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud emphasized the need for a ceasefire to prevent further escalation.
In his speech at the UN General Assembly, Netanyahu focused on normalizing ties with Saudi Arabia but did not mention Palestine or the Palestinians. Both Safadi and bin Farhan emphasized the importance of resolving the Palestinian issue for regional peace and stability. Safadi proposed a two-state solution with guarantees for Israel’s security.
There is a shared concern that Netanyahu’s stance against a two-state solution is detrimental to peace efforts in the region. The need for addressing the Palestinian issue to achieve lasting peace was highlighted by both Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
