Wajima, Ishikawa Pref. – Ten elementary and junior high schools in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, reopened after heavy rain caused closures. Two schools remain shut due to flooding, while the rest are back in session.
Following a devastating earthquake on Jan. 1, Wajima faced more challenges as record-breaking rains hit the area. Despite the setbacks, children returned to school with laughter and excitement at a temporary location established in Wajima town.
Tasuku Kakiuchi, a 7-year-old student, expressed joy at returning to school and enjoying physical education. He also shared the fear he felt when the river near his house swelled during the heavy rainfall.
Search operations for missing individuals continue as some households still lack water and electricity. Road closures have stranded a few people, but the number is decreasing. Evacuation centers are providing refuge to those affected in Wajima, Suzu, and Noto.
