Three Iranian nationals employed by the country’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard have been charged by the U.S. Justice Department for hacking into the campaign of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. The hackers targeted various entities, including government officials, members of the media, and non-governmental organizations.
The Trump campaign confirmed the hack on Aug. 10, revealing that sensitive internal documents were stolen and distributed by Iranian actors. Major news organizations such as Politico, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, who received leaked information, chose not to publish it.
U.S. intelligence officials linked Iran to the hack of the Trump campaign and an attempted breach of the Joe Biden-Kamala Harris campaign. The operation aimed to sow discord, exploit societal divisions, and potentially influence elections perceived as critical to Iran’s national security interests.
The indictment coincides with heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, as Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel engage in increased hostilities. U.S. officials also report monitoring physical threats from Iran against various officials, including Trump.
