Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGENCO) and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC) have formed a Joint Venture agreement to implement large-scale renewable energy projects in Andhra Pradesh. This partnership will focus on developing solar power plants and pumped storage projects to meet the state’s growing energy needs, while also reducing the carbon footprint.
APGENCO already supplies 47% of Andhra Pradesh’s energy with an installed capacity of 8,800 MW. They plan to add an additional 8,560 MW through various renewable energy initiatives in the next five years. NHPC, with an existing 7,100 MW capacity, aims to expand with an additional 46,400 MW of green energy projects nationwide.
Andhra Pradesh is leading in renewable energy development, with 36 identified locations for pumped storage projects totaling 39,000 MW capacity. The Joint Venture between APGENCO and NHPC will develop 5,070 MW across five pumped storage projects, expected to be commissioned in the next five years. Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar hailed this partnership as a significant step towards securing Andhra Pradesh’s energy future and meeting national renewable energy goals. Energy Secretary K Vijayanand praised the collaboration as a model for other states to meet sustainable energy requirements.
