Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, is set to brief the Cabinet on her proposed ban of XL Bullys in response to a series of serious attacks. The ban will be implemented in two stages, starting with the prohibition of importing, breeding, selling, or rehoming XL Bully dogs from Tuesday. As of 1 February, owning an XL Bully without a certification of exemption will be illegal, although responsible owners can apply for this certification if their dog is licensed, microchipped, and neutered.
The decision to ban XL Bullys comes after incidents like the tragic death of Nicole Morey in Limerick and recent attacks on individuals in Kerry and Wexford. The Minister emphasizes the importance of public safety and aims to align with regulations in neighboring jurisdictions.
While some groups have expressed concerns and called for a delay in implementation, Minister Byrne asserts that the ban will proceed as planned to ensure the safety of both the public and animals.
