Recent reports have brought to light some issues with artillery shells provided through the Czech initiative, as stated in a letter from Kyiv to Prague. The initiative was launched earlier this year to address Ukraine’s shell shortages, caused by delays in U.S. assistance. Although 500,000 155 mm shells and 300,000 122 mm shells were identified outside Europe for purchase, a small percentage of the received shells have exploded prematurely during combat, causing injuries and damage. The malfunctions were traced back to older detonators from World War II.
Despite these setbacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed gratitude for the Czech initiative and support, which extends beyond artillery ammunition to include main battle tanks, helicopters, armored vehicles, and more. Additionally, Zelensky recently unveiled his ‘victory plan,’ aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. While Western officials have not seen any major breakthrough in the plan, it signifies a continued effort to secure peace and stability in the region. The support from Czechia and other allies remains crucial in Ukraine’s fight for independence and security.
