Russia is utilizing Chinese satellites to gather information on Ukraine’s nuclear facilities, potentially posing a threat of future attacks, as revealed by President Volodymyr Zelensky in an ABC News interview. Reports indicate that Russia has been capturing detailed images of these facilities, raising concerns about potential strikes on nuclear objects. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also highlighted the risk to essential systems that support the functioning of nuclear power plants, prompting Ukraine to notify international partners and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about the threat.
Specifically, the safety of three operational nuclear power plants in Ukraine is at risk due to Russia’s continuous attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure. The situation is exacerbated by the occupation of Europe’s largest nuclear power station, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, by Russian forces since March 2022. The plant has faced repeated disconnections from the Ukrainian power grid and has been used by Russian forces for military purposes.
Despite Russian claims of planned ‘dirty bomb’ attacks on nuclear plants, Ukraine firmly denies any intention or capability to carry out such actions. The ongoing conflict underscores the critical need to protect Ukraine’s nuclear facilities and ensure the safety of its energy infrastructure.
