UN General Assembly 2024 – A Global Diplomatic Event
The 79th UN General Assembly, one of the largest global diplomatic events, will commence on September 24th in New York. This annual gathering at the UN headquarters brings together heads of state and government from member states from September 24th to 30th.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will open the 79th session, chaired by Cameroonian President Philemon Yong. Over 130 heads of state, including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, are expected to address the Assembly, focusing on various global crises ranging from Gaza to Ukraine.
This year’s theme, “Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity,” highlights the need for reform in the global order. Leaders will discuss issues like sustainable development goals, antimicrobial resistance, and nuclear disarmament.
Notable moments from past assemblies, like Fidel Castro’s 296-minute speech and Gaddafi’s 100-minute address tearing up the UN Charter, add to the historical significance of this event.
