South Korea has issued a warning to North Korea, stating that “decisive military action” will be taken if anyone is killed by the balloons carrying trash launched across the border. Pyongyang has been launching balloons filled with garbage since May, causing disruptions and safety threats in the South.
The tactic is believed to be a response to activists in the South sending propaganda-filled balloons to the North. Seoul has promised to take action if the safety of its citizens is compromised, without specifying what the measures would be.
The recent escalation comes amidst strained relations between the two Koreas, with the North deploying ballistic missile launchers and revealing its uranium enrichment facility. Concerns are high, as the North could conduct its seventh nuclear test anytime soon.
As tensions rise, the threat of military action looms, adding to the already volatile situation on the Korean peninsula. The international community watches closely as the situation unfolds, hoping for a peaceful resolution.
